Online or offline, Hold’Em or Draw, the appeal of poker knows no boundaries – as the number of celebrities who are known for playing shows. Here are just five famous poker players who enjoy more than the odd game or two.
The former all-conquering tennis star is no stranger to the poker table, having appeared in both the European and World Poker Tours since retiring from his first sport. His career earnings to date are estimated at €90,000 – probably not much more than pocket change to him, but an impressive achievement nonetheless.
The actor won the California State Poker Championship in 2004, with winnings of over $350,000. Affleck is accomplished at other card games as well – he was famously ‘discouraged’ from playing blackjack in Las Vegas casinos after, he says, becoming too ‘decent’ at the game.
The co-creator of The Simpsons was a noted poker player who competed in the WSOP every year between 2007 and 2011, achieving in the money finishes in six tournaments. He was a specialist in the various Hold’Em games and in 2010 won over $57k in a single tournament. Sadly, he passed away in 2015.
The world’s all-time greatest swimmer is no stranger to the green felt, making his first appearance at the WSOP in 2013 in a $5,000 No Limit Hold’Em event in which he survived until day two. He is, unfortunately, markedly less successful at the table than in the pool, with a career earnings of only $5k.
The American Pie actress describes poker as her ‘second career’, regularly appearing at tables with leading professional players. She has cashed out at the WSOP on a total of 4 occasions at the time of writing.
